Marble grinding: how does it differ from concrete, and what should be considered?
Marble is softer than concrete and reacts with acid. The diamond tooling, grit sequence, and floor chemicals suitable for concrete can damage the surface of marble — here is where the two materials differ.
Marble and concrete are two materials that are worked on with the same floor grinder but behave completely differently. Applying a method that works on concrete to marble often damages the surface in a way that is difficult to reverse.
Three fundamental differences
- Hardness. Marble is calcium carbonate-based and significantly softer than concrete. An aggressive diamond segment chosen for concrete will leave deep scratches on marble; the extra grit sequences required to remove those scratches will prolong the job.
- Acid sensitivity. Marble reacts with acid. Some cleaners that do not cause issues on concrete floors will leave dull spots and stains on marble. When choosing a product, the label "suitable for concrete" is not sufficient for marble.
- Vein structure. Marble is not homogeneous; veins and fillers have different hardness levels. When passing over the surface with the same disc, the vein area may wear faster, causing waviness on the surface.
Why is the grit sequence longer?
The target gloss level for marble is usually higher than for concrete. This means more grit sequences: the scratches left in the coarse grit become more visible in the fine grit because every scratch stands out when the surface is mirror-like.
Rule of thumb: do not move to the next grit until the previous one has visibly removed the scratches. This rule is even stricter for marble than for concrete.
What changes on the machine side?
- RPM and pressure. High pressure and low RPM on soft material cause "gouging." Controlled pressure is more critical on marble than on concrete.
- Single disc or planetary? Single disc polishing machines are common for fine grit and crystallization processes on marble; planetary heads stand out for coarse leveling and large areas.
- Wet working. Wet grinding on marble both suppresses dust and cools the surface. Overheating can lead to color changes on the surface in some processes.
Diagnosis first for old marble
The main question for aged marble floors is "which grit to start with." Is there only a dull layer on the surface, or has the wear and scratching gone deep? Making a decision for the entire floor without testing on a small area means either going deeper than necessary and losing material, or not going deep enough and failing to get results.
