Crystallization or mechanical polishing? The difference between the two

One creates a chemical layer on the surface, while the other polishes the material itself. Which one is right for your project in terms of cost, lifespan, and maintenance?

On marble and natural stone floors, shine is achieved in two different ways. Both are called "polishing," but they are different things and yield different results.

Crystallization

It is the process of creating a thin, hard layer on the surface using steel wool and an acidic chemical, combined with the friction and heat of a single disc floor grinder.

  • It is fast and provides a noticeable shine in one go.
  • The cost is low — fewer stages, fewer consumables.
  • But it is a layer: it wears out, becomes dull in high-traffic areas, and needs to be repeated at certain intervals.
  • Acidic chemicals and repeated applications can lead to yellowing and layer buildup on the surface over time.

Mechanical (resin) polishing

It is the process of opening and closing the material's own surface using diamond and resin pads with increasingly fine abrasives. The shine comes from the stone itself.

  • It is permanent — there is no layer on top to wear away.
  • The surface is renewable: it can be refreshed years later by passing through fine grit stages.
  • But it takes longer and requires more stages/consumables; the initial cost is higher.

Which one for where?

  • High-traffic areas expecting long life (malls, hotel lobbies, hospitals): mechanical polishing. The maintenance frequency of crystallization increases the total cost here.
  • Jobs requiring fast results with limited budgets: crystallization is a reasonable choice — with the prior acceptance that it will need to be repeated.
  • If switching to mechanical on an already crystallized floor, the accumulated layer must be removed first; working over it will not yield results.

The only question to ask when deciding

"How many years will this floor remain unmaintained?" If the answer is short, crystallization is a better investment; if long, mechanical polishing is the better choice. Comparing the two methods based on price is misleading; what should be compared is the annual maintenance cost.
